Library Yoga
Surprise!
More options for you to practice.
Lovely Kira from the Milne Library in Williamstown has invited me to teach a short 6-week series Saturday mornings starting March 1! I was so happy to say yes because I adore Kira, and as you likely know making yoga more accessible has always been a priority of mine. This class is free for participants but don’t worry, I am getting paid.
Getting paid is a sticking point for me. Too often yoga (and fitness) professionals are expected to teach for free, or in ‘exchange’ for exposure. Clients know there are free classes everywhere to attend and hop from free class to free class, leaving the teachers who taught those free classes without the client list they were promised. It devalues our skills and expertise. But if that teacher gets paid, even a small donation from clients, they at least can buy groceries that week and build their clientele organically.
Here, the Milne Library is subsidizing. They are paying me so I can buy groceries, while making yoga accessible to those who may not otherwise be able to afford it. That’s great community building.
Yoga teachers, please stop teaching for free (that includes trades that don’t benefit you). When we all treat this like a profession, we get paid better, we are more valued, and then we can invest more time into our studies and trainings.
Hiring/contracting entities, please stop asking us to teach for free. We have to eat, too, and you want the best professional for your clients and reputation at the end of the day.
So if you want to join the Library Series you can attend single classes or multiple but you have to register in advance! Space is limited. Bring your own yoga mat if you have one.
See you soon!
